1922 Famed aviator Amelia Earhart flew to an altitude of 14,000 feet, setting a world record for female pilots and her first of many records.

1938 Chester Carlson and Otto Kornei succeeded in electronically copying the message from a glass slide to a sheet of wax paper. Carlson approached IBM with the idea and they turned it down. So Carlson sold the rights to the Haloid Company (later renamed Xerox), who used the technology to create the first plain paper photocopier.

1962 President John F. Kennedy announced the presence of an offensive Soviet missile buildup in Cuba. It was known as the “Cuban Missile Crisis.”

Music History:

1966 The Beach Boys ‘Good Vibrations’ made its debut on the US singles charts. Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, the track was recorded over six weeks in four different Los Angeles studios, at a cost of over $16,000. The recording engineer would later say that the last take sounded exactly like the first, six months earlier. The record would reach No.1 on the US charts in December 1966.
