Democrats from Berrien and Van Buren counties celebrated the Fourth of July this week together in South Haven, and they were joined by a prominent guest.

California Governor Gavin Newsom stopped by the gathering to stump for President Joe Biden.

Newsom said despite Biden’s recent debate performance, he has the record to show he’s a better choice for president than the alternative.

Joe Biden, regardless of time of life, has a quality of imagination where he’s delivered more than any president in my lifetime in just three and a half years,” Newsom said. “I’m old-fashioned. I care about results and outputs, and he’s produced. And so I’ll leave more objective minds to judge that. But I’m not looking for a performer-in-chief, I’m looking for a commander-in-chief.”

On hand for the gathering were state Representative Joey Andrews and Jessica Swartz, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House in Michigan’s Fourth District.

On Facebook, Andrews said on July 4, 1776, the nation “declared that we would govern ourselves rather than bow to a tyrant king.” He adds with an election upon us now, the nation faces “a would be king on one side, and a president with an unprecedented list of accomplishments” on the other.

The Berrien County Democratic Party says Newsom’s message was, “Worry less, do more.”
