Michigan’s restaurant industry is in a precarious place since the pandemic. That’s according to a survey of members of the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association.

President and CEO Justin Winslow says one in four restaurants show revenue growth in the past year with 45% seeing a decrease in traffic.

The state of the industry is a lot more precarious than we had understood or anticipated, even hearing those negative vibes from our members right now,” Winslow said. “The residual impact of the pandemic has had a long tail.”

Winslow says restaurant owners are also concerned the Michigan Supreme Court might eliminate the server tip credit. He says many restaurants say they would have to close if that happens because they would have to help make up the difference in wages.
