A was held in Lansing Tuesday on a plan to encourage big-budget movie productions to once again bring their projects to Michigan. The Michigan Production Alliance supports the program, which does not provide rebates to filmmakers. The newly-designed legislation would instead offer a tax credit. Barton Bund, an actor and board member for the MPA, says Michigan is missing out by not offering incentives, while neighbor states are benefiting.

“The next Superman movie is shooting in Cincinnati, Ohio,” Bund said. “To me, that says we are missing out on an opportunity that our neighboring states are enjoying the benefits of, systems like this while we’re ready. I mean, we have the talent and we have the crews, but what we need is the infrastructure to sustain the industry.”

Bund says the legislation includes a provision for films that have a good amount of diversity and representation, to provide production companies with an additional 5% in tax credits. Several states including Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island already use transferable tax credits.
