St. Joseph Mayor Laura Goos and City Commissioner Lynn Todman attended their final meetings as elected officials in the city this week.

Goos and Todman have both opted not to seek re-election next month, and by the time the city commission meets again, someone else will have taken their places.

Goos has been on the city commission for six years with the last two as mayor. We asked her how it’s been.

“It’s been fantastic, it’s been a wonderful six years,” Goos said. “Honestly, what has surprised me the most about serving is the amount of work that our staff does on a daily basis for the community. It’s staggering, truly.”

And what is the most rewarding thing about serving?

“I think getting to know more of the community and also working on things that will be here long after I’m gone.”

Goos said major commission accomplishments in her time have included the sustainability committee, the passage of a non-discrimination ordinance, and downtown developments.

Todman, who’s been a commissioner for five years, told us she’s happy she was able to serve and she looks forward to what the next commission can do.

City Manager John Hodgson thanked them for their service, noting the positions are voluntary, require a lot of work and time, and come with little compensation.
