Governor Gretchen Whitmer says newly signed legislation will help make life easier for the families of veterans.

Senate Bill 176 amends the General Property Tax Act to ensure the spouses of disabled veterans can keep their property tax exemptions after their spouse passes away.

“This is a priority that I think unites Michiganders all across our state and across he aisle,” Whitmer said. “We know that behind every service member and veteran is a strong family providing unwavering support and love. Michigan will always keep our commitment to service members, veterans, and their families. We’ll fight for you because you fought for us.”

Whitmer says veterans make great sacrifices to keep their country safe, and the new law will mean their spouses don’t have to fill out an annual affidavit to keep the property tax exemptions. She calls it a bipartisan issue that all Michiganders support.
