 1651 According to the book, the fictional character Robinson Crusoe embarked on his first sea voyage, from Hull to London. Daniel Defoe’s story was based on the real-life adventures of Alexander Selkirk.

1873 Cable car streetcar service began on Clay Street Hill in San Francisco.

1878 The first woman telephone operator, Emma Nutt was hired is by Alexander Graham Bell for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company.

1985 The remains of the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic were located by ocean researchers. The ship sank in 1912 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic during her maiden voyage.

 

 Music History:

1977 The band “Blondie” featuring former Playboy Bunny Debra Harry, signed their first major record company contract with Chrysalis Records.

They would go on to score a number of singles including: Call Me, Heart of Glass, One Way or Another and The Tide is High.
