There’s something missing from downtown Detroit. Mayor Mike Duggan told city workers to remove the bust of Christopher Columbus from along Randolph Street near Jefferson.

“When I looked at some of the violence around the country, and in particular, you’ve got people with arms gathering around a Columbus statue in Philadelphia and arguing with people, we don’t need this,” Duggan told Michigan News Network. “We should have a conversation as a community as to what is the appropriate place for such a statue.”

Duggan says the bust has been put in storage for the time being. Detroit City Council voted three years ago to end Columbus Day as a holiday in the city.
