St. Joseph Public Schools’ newest foundation is making significant progress.

Earlier this year, the district launched the Maize and Blue Fund, an initiative created to “raise, steward, and distribute resources to enrich and support the experiences of athletics at St. Joseph Public Schools.”

At Monday night’s board of education meeting, fund president Rick Dyer provided an update on the foundation’s progress.

“We’re really right now going through all of our, what I’d say is the organizational aspects of it,” Dyer said. “The board has met a couple different times. We have three different committees that have now met, applied for 501c3 status with the IRS, so we need to hear back from them.”

Dyer stated that the foundation set a goal of raising $100,000 in its first year and has already collected more than half of that amount in just a few months. He also mentioned a kick-off event scheduled for this coming fall.

“We’re public that it exists, but we plan a public formal kickoff in the fall,” Dyer said. “It’ll be tied in to the start of the school year in the fall, perhaps one of the first football games we’ll have at any event.

The foundation continues to discuss ways to positively impact student-athletes, including initiatives focused on nutrition and helping athletes excel.
