United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain is defending his support of most of President Trump’s tariffs.
Fain says there are a lot of Trump administration policies that the UAW opposes, including a few of the tariffs. However, he says the union will go to the mat to support what he calls undoing our broken trade system.
“We’re not aligning everything we do with the Trump administration,” Fain said. “We don’t align with any politician or president. We’re negotiating with the Trump administration. Our approach to President Trump is no different than our approach was to President Biden.”
Fain did actively support Kamala Harris in 2024, and the union has traditionally backed Democratic candidates.
