1940 A patent for the first shopping cart was granted to its inventor Sylvan Goldman, owner of the Humpty Dumpty Grocery store in Oklahoma City. It was essentially a folding chair with wheels and baskets attached.
1959 NASA picked its first seven astronauts. They became known as the Mercury Seven. The astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glen, Virgil ‘Gus’ Grisson, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. All seven went to space.
1965 The first ‘domed’ stadium, The Houston Astrodome opened. Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome in an exhibition game between the Astros and Yankees that same day.

1974 Canadian artist Terry Jacks was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Seasons in The Sun.’ Jacks was the first Canadian to have a No.1 song since Paul Anka in 1957.
