The Beacon Health System from Northern Indiana is set to acquire the Ascension Healthcare system in Southwest Michigan.

On Thursday, Beacon finalized a definitive agreement to take over all facilities operated by Ascension Michigan in the southwest region.

Beacon Health System CEO Kreg Gruber says the transaction is anticipated to be completed by this summer.

“As part of Beacon, they will join a strong, locally owned and governed organization with the resources to take quality care to the next level,” Gruber says. “Beacon will provide the expertise and investment needed to enhance critically needed specialty care services, provide the expertise and investment to expand service lines and make infrastructure improvements such as uplifting our clinical systems.”

Ascension approached Beacon last fall following the merger of Ascension Michigan’s other hospitals with Henry Ford Health. As part of the agreement, four hospitals, 35 outpatient clinics, and an ambulatory surgery center in the area will be rebranded as Beacon facilities.

This will affect locations including Ascension Borgess-Lee Hospital in Dowagiac, Ascension Borgess-Pipp Hospital in Plainwell, Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, and Ascension Borgess Allegan Hospital.

“By expanding our service area significantly, we will create a larger scale to support efficient, quality care,” Gruber says. “That’s important in today’s fast-evolving healthcare landscape.”

Current patients of Ascension can expect to receive the same high level of care, with no disruption of services before or after the finalization of the sale.

Beacon officials did not disclose the financial details of the transaction at this time.
