1634 Samuel Cole opened the first official tavern and house of entertainment in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, called Cole’s Inn. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow referenced it in his play John Endicott as The Three Mariners.

1789 The U.S. Constitution goes into effect, after having been ratified the previous June.

1933 U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt made his famous proclamation during his inauguration speech. “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is… fear itself.”

 

Music History:

1974 ABBA released ‘Waterloo’ the first single from their second album and the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. It later became the winning entry for Sweden in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and a No.1 hit in several countries. It reached the US Top 10 and went on to sell nearly six million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles in history.
