1968 Penny Ann Early became the first woman to play professional basketball. She had earned her jockey’s license, making her the first female jockey. However, male jockeys refused to race with her. In response, the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association signed her to their team, even though she had no basketball experience.
