1972 Despite the ongoing Watergate proceedings, President Richard Nixon was re-elected by a landslide. He received almost 18 million more popular votes than his Democratic opponent Senator George McGovern. It is the widest margin of any U.S. presidential election. Of course, both he and Vice-President Spiro Agnew would resign before the term ended.
1976 The first time the movie Gone with the Wind was broadcast on television, with the conclusion the following night. It received the highest rating to date for a movie on TV.
1991 Magic Johnson retired after learning he had contracted the AIDS virus. He came out of retirement less than a year later.

1975 Elton John started a three-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Rock of The Westies’, the singers tenth studio album and seventh US No.1 contained the US No.1, ‘Island Girl’, which was released prior to the album.
