The Michigan Department of Transportation is moving to its next phase in the US-12 project next week.

Starting Monday, August 5, 3rd street will be closed on the north side of the US-12 intersection between US-12 and Beeson Road in Niles. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa says this part of the project will be rebuilding the north half of the intersection.

We’ll be rebuilding that north half of the intersection,” Schirripa said. “So US-12 will be open for traffic still. Third Street south of US-12 will remain open. Just that little bit just north of US 12 where those two meet will be closed for a couple of weeks.”

Work includes pavement removal, paving, and drainage replacement. No traffic will be permitted from US-12 to northbound 3rd street, or southbound 3rd street to US-12.

Schirripa says detours will be in place.

If you are southbound on 3rd Street heading toward US-12, or wanting to get from US-12 to 3rd Street north of US-12, there is a detour. We’ll be on M51 and 4th Street, looping around either direction.”

Schirripa says the project is slated to be completed August 19, barring weather. This entire US-12 project will replace the existing US-12/M-51 interchange with signaled intersection with indirect left turns.
