 1431 – 19-year-old Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in France, after being found guilty on charges of sorcery and heresy.

1868 – General John Logan was so inspired when he saw young women decorating the graves of Civil War Heroes that he suggested a national holiday called Decoration Day. It later became Memorial Day.

1911 – The first Indy 500 was held. After six hours of driving, Ray Harroun won with an average speed of 74.6 miles per hour. Today, the average speed is over 230 mph.

1922 – The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington D.C.
