State education leaders say not enough high school seniors are applying for student aid. Hoping to solve that problem, MI Student Aid is collaborating with Hungry Howies and the Michigan Credit Union League to kick off the Reach for the Pie contest. 100 random students who fill out their FAFSA will be picked to get free pizza for a year.

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist says the goal is to have students afford an education and stay in Michigan.

I want every one of you who decides you want to continue your education to be able to actually afford it,” Gilchrist said. “It’s going to help you be able to finish it. And when you get that degree from a college or a university in Michigan, then I want you to stay here and get your first job here or start your first business here.”

Gilchrist says 25,000 Michigan students missed out on $110 million dollars last year by not completing their FAFSA.
