There’s been another case of a preventable disease in Michigan.
Washtenaw County has announced its second case of the measles.
Dr. Rebecca Schein, a pediatric infectious disease physician at Michigan State University, calls the measles extremely infectious.
“If the vaccination rates do not improve, the numbers of cases of measles are going to go up,” Schein said. “There was a big outbreak in Michigan in 2019 in and around the Detroit area in a group of unvaccinated persons. And these cases also, it’s incredibly infectious. And these cases also, it’s incredibly infectious. So one person with measles exposing a group of unvaccinated people will lead to large numbers of cases.”
This second case is in an adult without prior immunity. They were exposed to the first case and could have exposed others at a University of Michigan dorm, the hospital, urgent care facilities, and more.
