 1942 In order to conserve gas and rubber for the war effort, nationwide gas and tire rationing went into effect in the US. Families were allowed 3 gallons of gas, have no more than 5 tires and drive no more than 35 mph.

1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus prompting her arrest. Her arrest led to a year-long city bus boycott which then led to a ruling that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

1969 The U.S. selective services conducted its first war draft lottery to determine the order of call to military service for the Vietnam War. The draft applied to men 19 to 26. The draft continued until 1972.

 

Music History:

1966 Tom Jones was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of ‘Green Green Grass of Home.’ It stayed at No.1 for seven weeks giving Decca records its first million selling single by a British artist. Also a No.11 hit in the US.
