1924, The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as store employees marched to Macy’s Herald Square, the flagship store on 34th Street, dressed in vibrant costumes. There were floats, professional bands and live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. At the end of that first parade, Santa Claus was welcomed into Herald Square.
1968 Penny Ann Early becomes the first woman to play professional basketball. She had earned her jockey’s license, making her the first female jockey. However, male jockeys refused to race with her in an attempt to block her from competing. In response, the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association signed her to their team, even though she had no basketball experience.
Music History:
1896 The masterpiece pronounced: (Also Sprok Zara Thustra’) by Richard Strass was first performed in Germany. The initial fanfare, titled “Sunrise”, was used Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: Space Odyssey in (1968).
