
Public comment is now being taken on an application from Indeck Energy Services in Niles to change its air quality permit to better reflect the equipment installed at its facility. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy says the “changes are to reflect equipment actually installed and to lower current permitted emission limits.” This means Indeck would be authorized to have lower emissions than its current permit allows. Indeck is a natural gas plant that just opened last year. Its new permit application to EGLE is not related to noise complaints the plant received back in May, leading to its temporary shutdown. According to the city of Niles, the noise issue was resolved. EGLE is taking public comment on Indeck’s latest permit request through August 30. The public can also request a hearing on the permit. If one is held, it will be virtually.
