Improvements to a local park are on the way thanks to new grant funds.
The St. Joseph Charter Township board on Monday accepted a $200,000 Great Lakes Fishery Grant to be used for improvements to Carronde Park, including the installation of fishing platforms, a kayak launch and connecting sidewalks. The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 2, 2023.
According to township manager Denise Cook, the grant will be used as a township match on a previous $600,000 project. An earlier grant $200,000 was secured via a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant, which required a match of $200,000 from the township. The township will commit an additional $200,000 for $600,000 worth of improvements to the park, which has about 1,000 feet of river shoreline.
In addition to improved sidewalks, the project includes repairing the tennis courts, adding pickleball courts, adding paved parking, benches, picnic tables, recycle bins and improved signage.
