The U.S. House is expected to vote on a bill to protect abortion rights this week. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News that doesn’t mean the bill will come close to final approval in Washington.
“This will be on Friday,” Upton said. “There will be a vote to codify Roe v. Wade to allow abortion literally up until nine months of the pregnancy, and I will be voting no on that bill come Friday morning. It is expected to pass. It’s expected that all but maybe one or two of the Democrats will vote for it.”
Upton says it’s unlikely any Republicans will vote for the bill in the House. He says he is pro-life, but supports exceptions for the health of the mother, rape, and incest. The bill is unlikely to get a vote in the Senate. As far as how the Supreme Court decision striking down Roe vs. Wade will affect the midterm elections, Upton says it will in Michigan due to the abortion rights constitutional amendment set to be on the ballot. However, he still expects Republicans to win control of the U.S. House.
