Huskies will be the new mascot for Hartford Public Schools after the board of education voted to stop using Indians at the request of the Pokagon Tribe. High school student Cessie Finley says they have several ideas to incorporate the new mascot.

“We decided that paw prints can be used throughout the hallways, leading to courts and leading to the football field. We can also use names like ‘The Pound’ or ‘The Doghouse’ for our gyms,” she told the school board, adding fun songs like “Who Let the Dogs Out” can also be used.

A student-led committee went through the 274 names submitted and had five criteria for the new name. Those were inclusiveness, pride inspiring, unique, true to community, and non-controversial. The committee is now working on the logo for the new mascot with the school board’s approval last night.
