St. Joseph City Commissioners have opted to offer the position of city clerk to current Deputy Clerk Abby Bishop. During a Monday meeting, Commissioner Lynn Todman said the city received two applications for the job, one from Bishop and one from the village clerk in Paw Paw. Mayor Laura Goos said the local deputy clerk has more election experience.

“I understand, really, one candidate has actual election experience, which is a large part of our clerk role,” Goos said.

City Manager John Hodgson praised Bishop for the work she’s done.

“She’s essentially been doing the job for about five months at this point in time, and I’m very impressed with what she’s done and her growth.”

Hodgson said Bishop moved into the post sooner than had been expected with the departure of the former clerk. Goos also said it’s good to promote from the back bench. Commissioners voted unanimously to offer the job to Bishop.
