An eleven-year-old Traverse City girl is at it again. Piper Shumar has been collecting cans and bottles and raising money to buy bikes for kids at Christmas time. She started the effort “Piper’s Project-this Girl Can” back in 2018 and raised enough money for 115 bikes this year and spoke to Michigan News Network about the effort.
“We actually give them to Toys for Tots, and they distribute them among the people that they need to,” Shumar said.
Piper says she started the project because she had health issues when she was younger and she would bike to help her feel better. She says she wanted other kids to have fun and have something to look forward to for Christmas and thought bikes would be a fun thing.
