1956 The highway act was signed, authorizing $33 billion for the construction of the U.S. interstate highway system.
1965 The first major U.S. ground offensive of the Viet Nam war began when 3,000 troops attacked 20 miles northeast of Saigon.
1972 The U.S. Supreme Court banned the death penalty, declaring it cruel and unusual punishment and therefore in violation of the 8th Amendment. It was overruled in 1976.
