Senator Gary Peters has introduced bipartisan legislation to address the financial challenges of the United States Postal Service. During a video news conference on Thursday he said the agency is dealing with some unique agency policies.
“Part of that financial strain is related to some requirements that they have that no other business in this country has. One, they have to pre-fund all of retirement healthcare regardless of the age of the employee and we’re gonna change that and end that requirement which will free up resources to enhance service and reliability.”
The Postal Service Reform Act would also integrate postal worker retirees’ health care with Medicare, along with requiring the Postal Service to maintain its standard of providing deliveries at least six days a week.
