 1820 The Lady with the Lamp Florence Nightingale was born. It’s said she contributed greatly to the development of modern hospital practices and the nursing profession. BTW she earned the nickname “Lady with the Lamp” due to her nighttime rounds caring for wounded soldiers.

1861 Julia Ward Howe’s song “Battle Hymn of the Republic” was performed for the first time at a flag-raising ceremony for Union recruits at Fort Warren near Boston. Also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory, it is sung to the tune of John Brown’s Body.

1896 The New York City Department of Health passed the first ban in the U.S. on spitting in public places.

 

Music History:

1965 Wilson Pickett recorded the soul classic ‘In the Midnight Hour.’ The song was composed by Pickett and Steve Cropper at the historic Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968.
