1973 Tony Orlando & Dawn started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles charts with ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree’, BTW the biggest selling song of 1973, selling over 6 million copies). The song was based on a true story of a prisoner who wrote to his wife asking that if she still loved him, to tie a yellow ribbon around an oak tree in the town square in White Oak, Georgia.
