The Fourth of July fireworks in South Haven might get washed away this year because of how high Lake Michigan is now and how much it’s expected to rise this summer. At last night’s city council meeting, City Manager Brian Dissette says last year, the decision to go ahead with the Fourth of July fireworks happened just days before the holiday due to the water level of Lake Michigan.
“Any type of west wind pushing water up on to the pier was going to make it impossible to fire them,” explained Dissette. “This year, the water’s supposed to be even higher in July.”
The lake might even be over the top of the pier by that point.
“If July is tossed as being an unrealistic goal, we’re also looking at doing a short show on New Year’s Eve,” said Dissette.
He added more meetings will be held this week, but they’re trying to make a decision well ahead of the summer.
